I'm Albert, a Software Engineer, RYA Instructor and Racing officer from London. I've been building software for 20 years and organising racing for watersports centres for 2. I'm on a mission to free watersports centres from Excel with bespoke software. You can find more about me on my website, and I obsessively log my sailing on this open logbook.
Why am I building Open Regatta?
I remember the first time I calculated results for our Twilight racing series at Docklands. I was embarrassed. I made mistakes, I didn't remember all the rules, my hands were cold and wet after pulling the marks out of the water, I was hungry and thirsty... But I wanted to be up to the high standards of my centre and deliver the results confidently.
I had to calculate them, double check them, (triple check them) and finally present them in front of all the participants! What if the results had been incorrectly calculated?
Fast forward 2 years and that feeling hasn't gone away completely, it still chases me. The feeling of making mistakes and being called out in public isn't something that I can get comfortable with :/
That's why I built Open Regatta - a revolutionary new way of sharing sail race results, proudly ;) I built it for sailing centres like mine - and hopefully yours too - (if you can't use it be sure to let me know why at albert@openregatta.com) with three principles: quick, easy and precise.
Let me ask you...
- Do you keep customers waiting days/weeks for race results?
- Have you ever made a mistake calculating them?
- Are you recording race scores on a wet paper with a pen?
- Do you calculate results by hand or with outdated software?
If the answer is yes, I invite you to start sharing results with OpenRegatta.
Share results proudly!
Albert.
